The PIANO

When the kids woke up this morning to discover a piano in the lounge... apparently it was too dark to take a decent picture! So you might need to take my word - it was a thrill:)

Yesterday was a day of impulsive shopping. Disregarding the fact that Kurt and I had not come to any sort of agreement on purchasing a piano... I have been stalking craigslist and researching pianos for weeks ... months actually. Kurt has held his ground, firmly stating his preference to purchase a digital piano over the real thing. He has many rational reasons for preferring digital, but mostly he rebels against the weight of a real piano. You see, it is no secret that Kurt and I both have issues with settling in a place for any length of time. I am sure those psychoanalysts of you out there could have a field day with this ... but purchasing a large, very heavy furniture item says : "we plan to stay here for a while" and that is a very stressful thing for us to come to terms with!

I have not given in easily, however. In fact I have been flat out relentless. " I just don't think I can fall in love with a digital" I would say, "they just don't feel the same" Really what it comes down to is that I see see piano as living, having a history, a story, a character... that comes out when it is played. Although I acknowlege the advantages of a digital piano, it is merely a computer to me and I cannot "talk" computer.

Then I changed my line of attack to something I thought would mean more to Kurt : " a digital piano is just going to lose value, we'll be lucky if it lasts a couple of years and if it does we will lose a lot of money in reselling it! If we move in the next few years we can always advertise a piano on craigslist and we can probably sell it for close to what we pay for it ... AND someone else will come and pick it up."

Well yesterday the ad I have been waiting for appeared. BUY ME the piano screamed, you need me , you want me and I offer FREE DELIVERY.

So I sent Kurt the ad in a chat on skype.

RELENTLESS.

No time for this.

Do I give in and keep peace, I wondered. Or do I .... not?

Proceed, with caution... I told myself ... and sent an email to th piano peddler to display my interest. The email led to a phone call, which led to another.... and then he was offering to bring it to my house for me to see it.

Then Kurt came home... burdened by work stress that should have made me bow out. But I could not.

"If you think this is a good deal" he relinquished, " you should go ahead"

And so I did. And now we own a piano. And who would have thought a piano could make me SO happy.

It returns my love like no computer could. and for this I am grateful.

I LOVE that you have a piano! I need you to stalk craigslist for me because I'm too lazy to do it. :) I'm so happy you have one! Now you can play concerts for us when we come over.

Sylvia, you and I are of the SAME opinion. Dad wants a keyboard and wants to get rid of our piano that I have had since I was 8 years old and I am adamant that it is staying. Guess who won. The piano now has its own room and we are planning on taking music lessons at our age.
