Wallpaper Wrangle -Just when I thought I had enough projects on the go....

Yes tonight I wondered upstairs and for some reason .... probably a need to escape form all the other things I should be doing..... I started tearing down the wallpaper in the kids bathroom. This is also the guest bathroom , mind you, and so now I am committed to pull off something in here before my parents (in law) come and visit in 2 weeks +. I might mention now that I have never removed wallpaper before... and that there are 2 layers of wallpaper... the 2nd plastered firmly on the drywall. So it is not quite as simple as TEARING it down - in fact more like dissecting with a toothpick at times! I couldn't shake the feeling that what I was doing was not good for my health - but knowing there was no turning back I put forth a good effort for a couple of hours:) At some point I thought it would be wise to read the instructions, again, on the bottle of DIF (this is a spray that really does make it more possible to remove the wall paper) that I was holding. I didn't want to miss the step that made the whole process painless!! I did not find that step, but I did come across a warning I had previously overlooked : "CAUTION contains a chemical known in the state of California to cause cancer". NICE!! Maybe that was what that not good for my health feeling was all about.

I will continue tomorrow ... I guess. Once I get the wallpaper off, I am going to have to texture the dry wall before I paint - ALL ADVICE WELCOME. I was thinking of all my handy friends in Oregon as I mindlessly peeled away. I thought of the conversations we might have had at 3'o'clock in the morning at work about the best way to proceed with this task.

I do not miss being awake at 3 in the morning.... but I do miss those talks : the parenting advice, the support, the laughter ... and the tears. I hold each of you and these moments dear to my heart.

Tomorrow I am hosting the neighbourhood playgroup .... this involves providing a snack for a quite a large number of mom's and kids... seeing as it is 10 51 pm now... I should probably get right on that;).

The exciting thing about tomorrow is this though : It is the day we put up our Christmas decorations. I LOVE this time of year....

So. . .after watching hours of HGTV (to my hubby's displeasure) I watched once a show where they were taking off wallpaper using different "methods". The results? . . . Good old hot water in a spray bottle/ or steam was the best, or just as effective as the chemical filled stuff. I hope it is going well. You could just wallpaper over the wallpaper. . .It is coming back you know. :o)

I hate stripping wallpaper!!! I had to do it before we moved to TX. I ended up using a mixture of hot water and fabric softener in a spray bottle, and a metal putty knife to scrape it off. There were some parts that didn't look smooth, but I just said "I don't care!" and painted over them. But then, I wasn't going to be living there anymore, so it really didn't matter. Lesson learned: Never, ever, EVER buy a house with wallpaper in it!!!

Thankyou for your comments - YES, Kelly I too discovered that the ONLY way to do it is with steam. Still a pain but really the only way! And Kristin... that was certainly a good lesson learned... I am hoping to find a reasonable quote to get someone else to do to finish the stripping in the other rooms!!
