Sunshine after the Storm

I thought of heading this post: Smooks 1 Tornadoes 0, but decided against it ... not wanting the Sky God to take it as a challenge or anything!

Yesterday we spent a quiet morning at home after our eventful night. For those of you who didn't get it on the news... we had a few tornadoes whip through the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex in the early hours of the yesterday morning. As far as I know they were quite unexpected.... the first thing we heard was a siren at around 4am. It was stormy outside and Kurt and I immediately jumped out of bed. I don't remember which one of us said "tornado" and then we rushed upstairs, rounded up all the children and took them to "the secret room under the stairs".

I had asked women at playgroup what we should know about tornadoes when we first arrived and was told that there is usually a warning siren and that one should go to a room with no windows or outside walls. The only room I could think of is the toilet in the main bathroom.... however there isn't much room in there for anything other than... well... a toilet!! We went there first but then moved under the stairs. The girls were quite thrilled with being woken up in the middle of the night to hide in their favourite play place. It was all very exciting in retrospect - and over in 2 min. It took a little longer however to get everyone back to sleep. Although we got by with very little damage (some branches taken off our Willow tree), according to the City of Allen website:

"Damage assessment is still underway but it appears that approximately 50 homes have sustained significant wind damage including roof and wall collapse due to winds in excess of 80 mph early Thursday morning."

Just wanted everyone to know that we are fine, gratefully. Actually the weather is beautiful now. Mila swam yesterday!

We did learn a lot from the experience... like
we need a storm radio - Kurt ventured upstairs to check out what was going on on the TV
I need to go through and update our 72 hour kit (which was comfortingly close -we keep it under the stairs) -I cannot remember if I have candles in there!
and...
we are going to learn more about tornadoes living here;)

Your post about Zimbabwe was heartbreaking! Please keep me posted! I learn so much from you guys - things I had no idea were going on on the other side of the planet!!

Tornadoes are my greatest fear! If ever I wake up during a bad storm...even in places that rarely have them - I always worry that the house is about to collapse on us. I can only imagine what was going through your mind. Great story! Seriously...you should start writing a column or a book or something!!!
