The Meanest Mom

Mila has been begging me to meet her at school for lunch for a while. She particularly wanted me to go today because it was the 100Th day of school and they had all sorts of activities organised. I am sure she is wishing that I never came.... I tried to hold my tongue as the first thing she placed on her tray was an ice-cream. It was quickly followed by a Ottis Spunkmeyer blueberry muffin (just cake by another name), luminous (really - I think it would glow in the dark) pink and yellow yogurt and a chocolate chip cookie. I was dumbfounded. Then she told me how healthy she was being as she scooped up some canned (with plenty of sugar) fruit.

When I signed Mila up to be able to get the odd lunch at school in October I had put a block on "extras" on her account. This was to prevent her spending my money on extra juice or.. ice -cream etc. Another mom at playgroup had filled me in that I was able to do this. She had plenty of interesting (or should I say appalling) stories of how her daughter would take the lunch tray and proceed to fill it with chips, juice, etc - that all cost extra and it would all come off her mom's card.

Well ,when I got home I phoned the cafeteria manager and ... hopefully this will not be happening again (the ice-cream anyway) .... what to do about the fact that everything else on her plate was considered a healthy lunch by the school district? I guess she will continue to take lunch from home for the most part.

Where are the days when school lunch was fish and mashed potato with semolina (also known by us as "frogs eggs") for dessert. This was in England.

A couple of days ago I came across a "The Meanest Mom" Blog. I have become a follower ... apparently we have quite a lot in common.
