I am thrilled that Barack Obama is going forward as the Democratic Representative for the Presidential race. I feel, like others around the world, that if he becomes the president of America it will dramatically change the way the rest of the world sees America. I believe he will make a positive impact within America and on the world. It is difficult to believe that McCain will direct the change necessary in this country, at this time. I wish I could vote - but Kurt and I will not have citizenship in time for this election.
Zimbabwe's run off elections were due to take place this Friday but the MDC leader, Tsvangirai,. has withdrawn following violence and intimidation initiated by Mugabe's ZANU PF. The UN is pushing for elections to be postponed as they are obviously not going to be "Free and Fair" but so far, Mugabe says they will be going ahead.
The excitement and hope felt in Zimbabwe prior to the March elections, has been replaced with fear as Mugabe has set up militia stations in both rural and urban areas. MDC supporters have been murdered, raped, tortured, threatened and beaten ... in a process of "re-education".
Those of you who have read my previous blog on this subject know that I was born in Zimbabwe and this process weighs heavily on my mind and pulls at my heart.
This is my prayer for Zimbabwe- bless those with the power to make a change in the country with wisdom and energy. Protect them from thugs, past feeling. Strengthen the mothers, lift the children, preserve the hope.

We are so confused about staying in the country or leaving it ... is it a matter of time b4 S.A turns into zimbabwe? I don't know what news you watch in the states but it's brutal the stuff happening in Zim. Some members say we must be prepared for the worst during July ... have our 72hour kits ready etc.
It is so hard, Andriette, I wish I could give you advice... I love Southern Africa and it still pains me to be so far away. But at the same time I cannot tell you what a difference the safety factor plays. So much less stressful not worrying about ... well all the security things that concern you there. Just keep your options open and only you and Justin will know what is right for your family.
Love Sylvia
