Long Showers... and Change the World Wednesdays

I follow a blog called Reduce Footprints who is starting Change the World Wednesdays. I know, I know .. it is Friday today but so be it. The challenge is to take a less than 10 minute shower once a week. I think reduce footprints is being easy on us for the first challenge - not to scare us away! Why, I didn't shower at all yesterday! That makes me particularly conserving of the earths resources today ... and ... stinky;).

Truth is I LOVE long showers. As the water pours down on me, it washes away tension and irritation. I escape from the noise of daily life and feel renewed.

Yes, water is very therapeutic.

Raised in a home where I was constantly reminded not to waste water and that "water costs money", however, I cannot feel peaceful dwelling too long under the spray.

So I have implemented a few techniques of my own:

1. Skip showering all together!! Yes for the all or nothing type of person that I am this works wonderfully. On days I just can't fit a shower in before I need to get out in the morning, a sink wash and some deodorant will do. This happens rarely due to my need for daily therapy though!

2. Skip showers or very short showers on swimming days for the kids! We swim a LOT.

3. Take all three kids into the shower with me. This may seem counter therapeautic, but apparently that "water gene" has been passed down. Most days they get down to business rubbing themselves clean and say very little in the shower. This way we avoid running a bath most days and I feel peaceful about my excessive shower time.

....and this is what we shall do right now ... off to the shower to start our day. Do you have any saving water strategies/ are you up for the challenge to limit you shower to 10 minutes (or less) once a week?

Wow ... thank you, so much, for participating in, and writing about, this challenge. And I love your ideas about how to maximize showers, getting the most out of the water used!

Next week's challenge is going to be a bit more difficult ... not too much ... but a bit. :) I can feel the world changing already!

Thanks, again!

Hi Sylvia, I enjoy my showers too much .. but Dad wets himself down and then turns off the shower while he soaps himself down and then turns on the water again to rinse off the suds. I have tried it a few times and it works well in summer but in the winter it can get a bit chilly.

What we also do is to catch the first bit of water in a bucket. We let it run until the water is hot. This water is then used to water a dry patch in our garden.

mine's kind of gross, but one way I conserve water is to live by the following mantra: "if it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, send it down".
