PALIN POWER

After a non-impressive night on Tuesday in the Republican Convention, I was delighted by the strong comeback last night... Huckabee and Giuliani gave great speeches leading up to Palin who was outstanding.

Thank you, Janet for your comment on my "Election Outburst post" - so great to get some feedback - and powerful, inspiring feedback at that:)

I do not believe this vote is for "a lesser of two evils" - from what I can tell both McCain and Obama are upstanding men, very much concerned for the welfare of the USA and Americans. I believe in this election we are in a very different situation (especially compared with 4 years ago) - where we can choose between good and better! These are exciting times.

To be upfront - I do not consider myself "democrat" or "republican". I like Obama because he inspires me and I like the way he thinks - I think he has potential to be a great leader. McCain does not strike me as the best leader and his ideas of reform do not seem like reform at all to me - I hope I am wrong.
-My citizenship is not yet processed so I will not be voting in this election.

In the past I have lent towards republican economics and morals, but more recently George Bush and his cronies have ruined that for me! I see hypocrisy in a party that claims high moral Christian standards and that is "pro-life" but then lies to Americans and launches into a war killing thousands of innocent men, women and children ... and continues taking lives despite the fact we still do not have a legitimate reason to be in Iraq??

Yes, there will always be wars - but if we are NOT fighting to protect America's freedom (in IRAQ - I am not referring to the hunt for Al Quaida in Afghanistan where I believe many innocent children were killed today also ) what are we fighting for?

I am also disappointed in the financial irresponsibility of this government and look forward to a time when America is not borrowing money form China.

If McCain does win this election, I hope that he and his pit bull, Palin can put an end to this nonsense.

Obama shows a keen sense of what it means to be a citizen of the world and not only a citizen of the USA. He a great communicator and has taken the moral high ground in this campaign by not using negative, divisive advertising etc. I believe his negotiation skills and humility will place America in a greater position to protect it's own Nation and influence other's for good.

I too am against abortion ... and pro adoption. I do not believe abortion should EVER be used as birth control. I would like women to have the opportunity to keep their babies (at least through the pregnancy) because there is a support system in place that involves free medical care and education (prenatal) etc...that will provide support to maintain a healthy (although perhaps not wanted) pregnancy. This is why I am impressed by Obama's plan to assist women to KEEP their babies because they have a CHOICE as their care is provided.

I do not support free medical care for everyone - but for pregnant women and young children ( and the elderly and disabled) who could not afford it otherwise. I have personally cared for a woman who was close to death after trying to self-abort or going to some "underground" slaughter house for lack of knowing what else to do - using dirty clothes hangers and the like to terminate a pregnancy. These are desperate women who needed support and care in their darkest hour. This is my experience when abortion is illegal - it still happens, but in an unsafe , scary environment. I would never agree to be involved in terminating a pregnancy but would love the opportunity to counsel women considering this.

I do support affordable medical care for everyone.

I agree with Janet's comment:
"He has wonderful ideas of helping the lower income families (Obama). The only problem is we can only help those who help themselves. In this country there are more fat, lazy, smoking, beer drinking, video playing, cable watching people on welfare than in any other country. There is something wrong when even our poor people can afford these vices. We don't need more government sponsored programs, we need families to embrace values."

The welfare programs definitely need reform. We must also make education more affordable and available for those who want to help themselves.

The tax issue raised is an interesting one --- a flat tax. Sounds great. I do think that where much is given, much is required though and that we should be caring for the weakest when they are unable to care for themselves. I do believe that many wealthy people manage their money and are generous and wiser than a government program. Right now, however, there is a huge disparity between wealthy and poor that needs to be addressed and the tax breaks for the rich have not worked in the past to filter down to the poor. Am I my brother's keeper?

Certainly in a perfect world we would not need government to have any welfare programs.

Oh - and here are 2 questions from an ignorant immigrant :
How do republicans get to be more patriotic than democrats in America?
What is the right to bear arms all about? - isn't it a contradiction to be pro -life and want to own a gun. My only experience with owning guns is that they will be used ... eventually... to kill someone (yes, that is right - I grew up pin the murder capital of the world - good old Joburg)

I seriously doubt that you are an ignorant immigrant!!! You seem to be watching this election process very closely and I commend you for your fairness.

I hope that you did not misunderstand something I said. I do not believe a republican can be more of a patriot than a democrat. Patriotism comes from your own values and love of this great country. One marking a box to declare one's party hardly qualifies them to be a patriot.

As far as "the right to bear arms" goes, that is my constitutional right. If weapons were made illegal, only the criminals would have them. I have a right to defend my religion, my family, my freedom and my country. I hope never to be in a situation where I would need to use such force but I take comfort in knowing it is my choice and my right. Just as it was the right of Captain Moroni. Don't misunderstand, I know he lead an army and I am only one but the principal of defending my family is the same. Furthermore, I grew up not as fortunate as I am now. I remember my father teaching me how to shoot a gun at a young age. I also remember eating what we shot. I grew up on dove, quail and venison. Ted Nugent has an organization he calls "Hunters for the Hungry". It is sponsered by the united sportsmen of america. They are donating the deer they hunt to feeding the hungry. They are able to do this because of the II Ammendment. So, NO, I do not believe that being pro life and pro gun is a contradiction. what I do believe is that people choices can make it appear as a contradiction. In the end, we are all responsible for our choices.

President Ezra Taft Benson, Prophet of the church when I was younger was an avid believer in the Constitution of the United of America. He has written many things that have helped me to understand the responsibilities that come with being a citizen of this great country. While serving in Washington D.C. he simultaneously served as an apostle. His words are educational, enlightening and comforting. You would enjoy them.

It's always fun to debate politics. In the end, my choice is mine and yours is yours and I love you all the same.

Happy Day!

I am so glad I have found someone else who enjoys a good political debate - thank you for your words and taking the time to share your thoughts and experience! Kurt and I think of your family fondly for taking our small immigrant family under your wing. We love you and miss you.

I have deep, deep concerns for our country if it falls into the hands of McCain and Palin. I know a lot of people view her as gutsy, but her I find her stand on the environment and on a woman's right to make decisions about her baby appalling. Did you hear the recurring chant, "Drill, Baby Drill" at the RNC? This kind of mindset is what has kept us oil (and middle-east) dependent, and has stood in the way of progressing to a more "green" planet. Not to mention what drilling will do to the Alaskan environment, one of the few pristine places left in our country. And Palin has publicly stated that drilling in Alaska is basically "God's plan" (as is, apparently, the current war).

She also supports aerial gunning down of wolves and bears, which I feel is a travesty! Check out https://secure.defenders.org/site/Donation2?idb=0&df_id=1547&1547.donation=form1&autologin=true&s_src=6JY08WDC4F&s_subsrc=6JY08WDC4F_EJI08D1b&JServSessionIdr012=dp4of2qw84.app27a
I am not a proponent of abortion as birth control, but Palin wants to ban it even in cases of rape and incest. If a mother's life is threatened by her pregnancy? Too bad. That baby will grow up without a mother. I find it ironic that she has stated her daughter "made the choice" about her pregnancy. But in a Palin world, not even her own daughter would have that right to choose.

If you saw the interview with Charles Gibson, it's pretty evident that Palin is in way over her head.

And don't even get me started on McCain... :-)
